Huh. Did not realize that. My dad was friends with the owner, Stan N(something) years ago. We used to eat there every now and again... WOW. I've been gone for more than 10 years now... =sigh* Still home though!!

I will catch up with you sometime soon to take you up on that offer. Never owned one before, and people seem to enjoy the hobby...would be good to try one out before taking the plunge.

I recall driving past the old Red Jacket several years ago and noticed it had been closed. I also recall having eaten there a couple of times in the early 1980's, back when I lived near Chemung (rented a place for several months on Rotary Road).

That area by the railroad Trestle use to be the location of an Indian trading post long ago. I worked with a guy who use to go down there often and search for relics. He said he had found metal buttons and other things there. He stopped going there a few years ago when a cardboard city appeared in the wooded area around it. Got a little to dangerous to be there with all the crack-heads and derelicts. I saw that the PD had cleaned it out though and its not bad there now. Its also where the walking trail along the old Railroad bed is going to be eventually if the funding is still there (?) http://www.ielmira.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=270&hilit=elmira+walking+trail

Let me know and I will get it to you, at your convenience. Open offer to anyone at that!

i am surprised there wasn't an archeological survey done before they started the project, i have tried in the past to dig up old maps of the area to get a better clue as to where the post and village were in that area but never succeeded.

You guys are talking about "Fort Reed" at the bend of the river. It was where Sullivan had his men set up the camp from which they forayed, pretty much without provisions, into Indian territory to live off the land while destroying the Native American's ability to do so. That's also where the Arnot/Tuttle Mills were located, and I believe where the first trading post in Elmira was set up.

Lots of history right there.

If they are in the church street area, that's where the old Manders Brewery stood. Bet they dig up some old bottles...

But you knew that already, didn't you?

I had heard that the Red Jacket still had all its belongings inside. They never auctioned off anything- or even let the owners remove items after the state purchased the property for the I86 improvements.

So- I know where Reeds Tavern is, and the Red Jacket- but that's not near Water- so I'm lost... is this the area across from Kennedy Valve where the old trestle is?

We need to get Newtown opened. Anyone interested in a petition drive?
