In an effort to better serve and protect the citizens of Chemung County, Sheriff Christopher Moss is offering the Yellow Dot Program, a joint effort of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association and over 30 County Sheriffs. The program launched in 30 counties across the state this week.

Yellow Dot is a free program designed to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during the first “golden hour” after a crash or other emergency. “When you can’t speak for yourself, Yellow Dot can speak for you,” said Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the Sheriffs’ Association. The Yellow Dot kit contains a medical information card and a Yellow Dot decal. Participants complete the card, attach a recent photo, place it in the glove compartment of their vehicle and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window. First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will be alerted by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medical information card in the glove compartment.

“The Yellow Dot Program will save lives by giving first responders vital medical information and saving time,” said Sheriff Moss.

Funded by Sheriff Moss and the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, the Yellow Dot Program is a free service available to individuals of all ages. Sheriff Moss’ office will distribute Yellow Dot kits to the public. You can also have a kit mailed to you by visiting www.nysheriffs.org/yellowdot.

The New York State Sheriffs’ Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation, formed in 1934, for the purpose of assisting Sheriffs in the efficient and effective delivery of Sheriffs’ services to the public. It comprises all of the elected and appointed Sheriffs of New York State. Yellow Dot was started in Connecticut in 2002 by People’s United Bank. Originally developed for senior citizens, the program can be used by anyone of any age.

One thing I see that concerns me is placing the dot on the rear drivers side window . Those windows are tempered glass that if broken in an accident ,the glass breaks into a million little pieces and the dot would be lost in the debris .
Better to maybe place it on the laminated windshield glass close to registration sticker where it is more likely to stay intact and be seen .
just an idea from a dumb glass guy .

Might want to let Chris Moss know of your experience. I have no clue what kind of testing they did in the real world for this program.

Car theft was a big deal at one point in Manhattan, so people could sign up at their local precinct to get a decal, that authorized the police to pull the car over if it was after 11pm, no probable cause needed. It cut way back on car thefts.

I don't know if the car theft problem up here is bad enough to warrant it. But I love the current idea as implemented, as long as the rear window works as positon for the sticker.

People witht the skills to steal cars lack the skills to scrape a decal off the window?

Stealing cars is easy, being observant enough to see the decal, obviously, not so much.

Is this similar to the Red Dot program started in India some time ago?
But you knew that already, didn't you?
