This is an old train bridge, (no longer connected to any tracks, nor are there any tracks still in place). It is just off the 352 overpass, for Rt.17. Stands about 100 feet off of the ground, with a small stream running under it. Very placid place.Context Map.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Imagehttp://farm3.static....52c224b32_b.jpgPosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Wow. Nice pics. Was out on that last summer, but didn't get down under. I remember looking at the direction of the supports, the direction of the bridge (trapezoidal) and the direction of the tracks above and the creek below, and always marveled at whatever bridge engineer put it together. Still very cool.
But you knew that already, didn't you?

I would love to find out when it was erected, the wood was rotting, but the iron was still pretty strong looking, I wouldn't want to run a train over it, but walking across it was no problem.

Tried to walk the dogs over it but they wouldn't have anything to do with it (can't blame em ). This is Bob Bailey's walking path along the old railbed on the Chemung River. One thing you will notice in all the articles they did is that Bob was always getting his picture take so you couldn't see the bridge abuttments at the K.V. side of the Railroad Bridge. It was an active route in the 40's and 50's because I took the Phoebe Snow to Chicago for Navy Boot Camp. The old train station would be interesting to get into for photos though.

Near the railroad tracks, on the same block as Savino's and Northside Pudgie's. It closed a few weeks ago.

Got in there when I was a teen. There were offices upstairs but the place was pretty much abandoned (early 70's). They tore a chunk of it down at the very end of Clinton Street. Very cool.I found a list of old train stations with addresses somewhere on the web last year. There's apparently one still up in Pine City, there are the remains of another near Washington Ave (the tile floor is still there) and CC Parkway.
But you knew that already, didn't you?

If you can get me addresses or lat/long coords, I will happily grab pictures. I love that kind of thing.

It is probably gone. Most everything having to do with history in Elmira has been razed. So much for preserving beautiful artifacts of the past and turning them into something useful for the present and future.Ah! Progress at its finest!

Maybe it is gone, or maybe something remains, taking a look only costs a bit of time.

If it's not raining, I plan on hitting that place today around noon-ish. I remember Ron telling me about some hijinks that went on there. Ought to be at least interesting.

Used to run/walk/bike down that RR right of way a lot. - That is the most over designed bridge I have ever seen, somebody either had big dreams or some surplus materials. If you went the other way, across Church St, beginning someplace near Sullivan Av. there was a really long, maybe 1/4 mile long, maybe longer "depot". Seemed to be just a covering to keep the rain off. Think there was a small ticket office w/ walls but do not recall for sure. Forget when they tore it down, not that long ago. Might have been when they tore out the Church St overpass. Just steel & concrete, was only interesting because of its scale.

That curved route from the old train bridge around to church /sullivan and curves around was once the Junction Canal Route, which the RR later bought for the right of way, filled it in and used it.

I think you are right. That walking trail that starts behind Beecher school that used to be RR tracks marks the path of the old Junction Canal.

I found a list of old train stations with addresses somewhere on the web last year. There's apparently one still up in Pine City,

The old Erie depot (Tioga / Elmira State Line Railroad) still stands in Webb Mills and is being used as a tavern. The other remaining Erie depot, located in Chemung, is to be demolished by NS (the owner) if not purchased/moved. From what I heard, the current tenant decided not to extend the contract, so the station is going to go. Chemung Valley Railway Historical Society is interested in acquiring the property; hopefully there is still some time left.More existing railroad stations in NY can be found here http://ny.existingstations.com/ ; Pennsylvania's: http://www.west2k.com/pa.htmCVRHS: http://www.chemungva...rg/welcome.html
