Council member balks at lawyer

The appointment of Elmira’s top lawyer could result in the loss of support from at least one Elmira City Council member for the city’s proposed $28.2 million budget for 2008.

There was yelling going on and one council member who wasn’t going to take it.  Pretty exciting stuff.  Sorry that every single one of you missed it (Nina excluded).

JOEL ROSENBERG has been on top of that Minneapolis wrong-house no-knock raid. And yes, he’s the same guy who writes fantasy/science fiction novels, but he’s also a handgun instructor.

Sometimes we just have to accept someone is going to get to flush evidence away.

Study rips public-defender system in upstate counties

Public defenders in some upstate counties are failing to provide adequate legal representation to the poor, an advocacy group charged last Thursday.

If they do, why don’t they get better jobs so they can afford it?   Oh, wait, because they want me to pay for it.  Sorry, I had a senior moment there.  Theres a reason people spend an extra 10 years or so in college, it is to earn more money, so that we can afford better defense counsel if needed.  Just like if I want Russian caviar, instead of McDonalds, I go and pay for, I don;t expect Wegmans to give it to me for free.

NEW YORK — Federal authorities have subpoenaed financial records and employees in an apparent probe of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s 2004 presidential bid, nonprofit civil rights group, and for-profit businesses, a newspaper reported Thursday.

As many as 10 Sharpton associates were subpoenaed Wednesday to testify before a federal grand jury in Brooklyn Dec. 26, his lawyer told the Daily News.

They were told to provide investigators with financial records from the campaign and roughly six Sharpton-related businesses, as well as personal financial documents of Sharpton and his wife, the newspaper said.

The FBI and Internal Revenue Service are seeking the records, which go back to 2001, according to the Daily News.

A Sharpton spokeswoman did not immediately return phone calls or e-mail messages early Thursday.

An FBI agent who answered the phone at the agency’s New York headquarters declined to comment, and an agency spokesman did not immediately return a…

Wow, just when we thought we were catching up with the “KingPins” of Crack this happens. Does this mean that the Supreme Court thinks that crack is a good thing ? I guess they may be right if you put it in the perspective of purchasing high ticket items. New Durango’s / Escalade’s and 24 inch rims come to mind. Also, the reasoning that giving these people a reduced sentence will reunite them with family and help the Communities is kind of far fetched if you ask me. But hey, the City of Elmira is short of ” Crack” dealers currently so I guess it will be good for the local ” users ” when they release em. But the truly sad part of all this is the example that this mornings ” Today” show used to show the effect it has on…

NY Post on Spitzer: “deeper in the Troopergate muck than he publicly admitted”.

A frequent guest on Capital Tonight; Fred Dicker is reporting in the New York Post that the Governor was “deeper in the Troopergate muck than he publicly admitted”.

I actually laughed out loud over this.  We all know spitzer is neck deep in corruption, and these media types are just figuring this out?
