Diabetes Epidemic

The number of people with diabetes in the Southern Tier has doubled over the past 10 years.  Alls one has to do is to drive through Elmira and look at the people walking the streets.  I think we have more of those Rascal scooters out there than walkers actually, and the sad thing is, if they woudl jsut get off of their Rascal scooter seat, they might not have such a problem getting around.

BOOZE AS A TREATMENT FOR COLDS: “Nonetheless, two large studies have found that although moderate drinking will not cure colds, it can help keep them at bay. One, by researchers at Carnegie Mellon in 1993, looked at 391 adults and found that resistance to colds increased with moderate drinking, except in smokers.” Plus, this: “The study, in The American Journal of Epidemiology, found no relationship between the incidence of colds and consumption of beer, spirits, Vitamin C or zinc. But drinking 8 to 14 glasses of wine per week, particularly red wine, was linked to as much as a 60 percent reduction in the risk of developing a cold. The scientists suspected this had something to do with the antioxidant properties of wine.”

Red wine is good for everything.

Contaminated Children’s Vaccines May Have Been Given at Guthrie

A Guthrie Group spokeswoman tells WETM that their family health practitioners administer Hib vaccines supplied by Merck, which are under recall for a contamination risk.

It was a government mandated vaccine, if you did not get it for your child, your child could not go to school. So everyone gets it and it is a crap shoot whether your kid dies or not. I guess life is like that, and i bet there is an exemption for politicians children.

Jackals Bus Driver Recovering

The Jackals bus driver’s condition is improving.  I was feeling bad about making a joke, at the expense of the driver, well not bad-bad, just uncomfortable bad.  Glad to hear he is doing better.

Mutation of common cold could be deadly

Sneezing and running noses are characteristics of the common cold. But the CDC says a new variation of the cold can be deadly. But do not be alarmed.

Gotta love the hysteria they are trying to generate.   Now every time someone gets a runny nose, it is going to be a life or death decision whether they get nyquil or not.

State OKs hospitals’ plan

New York state’s health commissioner has reluctantly agreed with Arnot Ogden Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital that the two facilities cannot join forces.

The business cultures at St. Joes and the Arnot are almost diametrically opposite, St.Joes is not going to survive unless they get a big benafactor (Namely the Guthrie) to take them over, only problem with that is that Sister Mary is not going to like her big fish status being downgraded or compeltely elminated.  So I prophsey, nothing much will go on at St. Joes while she is still running things, or until things get so bleak, change is forced, kicking and screaming on her.

The Arnot?  Business as usual, and business for them is pretty good, so get out fo the way.

Toy Recall Survey

Instead of shoppers buying Chinese made toys they would rather pay more for American made toys.  People have demanded the absolute lowest prices  for items (Including toys), driving the walmarts and Toy ‘r Us’s of the world to leave the United States, and look towards nations who have much cheaper labor pricing, zero oversight and an interest in nationally subsidies to factories.  We got exactly what we asked for, the cheapest possible products, made with the cheapest possible parts and ingredients.  Why are we then surprised to find out that those cheap trinkets are all dangerous in some way?

Oh, and unless little Johnny or little Suzy has Amish made wood blocks on their holiday wish list, good luck with finding any American made toys.

Wegmans recalls ground beef

Contaminated ground beef has forced all Wegmans and Hannaford Supermarkets to pull the product from their shelves. The meat, sold last month, came from Cargill Meat Solutions in Pennsylvania and may be contaminated with E. coli.

Sheesh. Alls I want is a fatty, about a pound of meat, with Jalepeno chunks, onion chunks, some spices cooked over a flame and put on a springy kaiser roll. Is it too much to ask for it not to kill my with diarrhea?
