Council member balks at lawyer

The appointment of Elmira’s top lawyer could result in the loss of support from at least one Elmira City Council member for the city’s proposed $28.2 million budget for 2008.

There was yelling going on and one council member who wasn’t going to take it.  Pretty exciting stuff.  Sorry that every single one of you missed it (Nina excluded).

CSEA members ratify contract

CSEA members overwhelmingly ratified a new contract for more than 70,000 state executive branch employees, the union announced yesterday. The vote was 29,755 to 1,839. The contract has to be approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Eliot Spitzer.

The agreement includes salary increases of 3 percent retroactive to April 2001 (when the previous contract ended,) 3 percent in April 2008, 3 percent in April 2009 and 4 percent in April 2010. Other parts of the contract include increases in longevity payments, improvement in downstate and mid-Hudson salary adjustments to reflect the higher cost of living there, and some increases in health insurance co-payments, balanced by a number of benefit enhancements.

The agreement is fair to employees and good for the people of New York, CSEA President Danny Donohue said in a statement. “The strength of the ratification demonstrates that our rank and file fully support the agreement,”…

DEC launches magazine

The Department of Environmental Conservation is launching a new magazine to connect children to the outdoors.

Who’s brother in law just opened a printing shop?  I mean, there can be no other excuse for this than simple graft.

Study rips public-defender system in upstate counties

Public defenders in some upstate counties are failing to provide adequate legal representation to the poor, an advocacy group charged last Thursday.

If they do, why don’t they get better jobs so they can afford it?   Oh, wait, because they want me to pay for it.  Sorry, I had a senior moment there.  Theres a reason people spend an extra 10 years or so in college, it is to earn more money, so that we can afford better defense counsel if needed.  Just like if I want Russian caviar, instead of McDonalds, I go and pay for, I don;t expect Wegmans to give it to me for free.

Discipline at EFA gets spotlight

Elmira’s schools chief will be dealing with discipline issues on at least two fronts this week in the wake of Wednesday’s fight at Elmira Free Academy and the subsequent airing of concerns by parents and teachers.

We don’t have very high expectationsfor these kids, and they are living up to those low expectations.

More Money

The City of Elmira plans to sue its insurance company because of a dispute over insurance money for the armory building.

Oh there will be righteous anger towards the insurance company, we will hire outside counsel, as our on the books counsel is not up to the task, counsel will do some serious work (Billed in 30 second increments), counsel will assure everyone who hired him that the case is in the bag, case will go forward, many more billable hours will be billed for, case will be lost.  We will be assured by our overlords that it was well worth the money to fight the case, you know for the principle of the thing.  Counsel will not retire, one can not retire on the half a million or so he will have gotten, but he will be happy.  City Council and our…

N.Y. judges’ lawsuit gains support

ALBANY — A lawsuit by state judges who want a raise can proceed, a state Supreme Court judge in Saratoga Springs has ruled.

This is actually funny.  A bunch of bank robbers get together, and rob some banks.  Then they get another bank robber to pass judgment on them.   And you know what?  It’s all legal.  Amazing.

Dresser Rand Picketers Set to Go Back to Work

Company officials are calling some picketers back. They say about 75 workers will return to their jobs on Tuesday.

Where is there head at?  Fire the bunch of the strikers, give good Christmas bonuses to the workers who put company first.  Build some loyalty.  it will come back to bite DR, they extended their hand already by hiring these union thugs, and now, they are going to let them bite it again?  will nay loyalty be show by the workers to DR?  Will there be any gratitude?  I seriously doubt it, there will be complaints, there will be law suits, their will be shoddy work.

Successful Arctic League Telethon

Telethon Raise More Than $33,000, Many Donations Not Yet Added To Total.  If I were a poor parent, personally I would prefer my child getting the absolute best education I could beg, borrow or steal for them, I think I would skip the teddy bear and the bratz dolls.
Is this a case of feel good over substance?  Or am I scrooge incarnate?
