Once again the Chemung County Historical Society is offering a free lecture series. The last series of lectures (which had to do with Chemung County’s involvement in WWII) were as interesting as they were informative and included pictures, posters and many times artifacts. Those giving the lectures were experts in their fields and delighted in answering audience questions. This series, titled “Into History,” promises to be just as good.

November’s series of lectures was well attended and were appropriate for all ages. All lectures are held at the Historical Society, 415 E. Water Street, Elmira. Lectures are informal, approximately 1 hour in length, and are free to the public. Due to space constraints, reservations are recommended but not required. Please call 734-4167.

DEC launches magazine

The Department of Environmental Conservation is launching a new magazine to connect children to the outdoors.

Who’s brother in law just opened a printing shop?  I mean, there can be no other excuse for this than simple graft.

Two Home Invasions in the City of Elmira

Two Elmira men are facing burglary charges after two separate home invasions in the city of Elmira Saturday night.

Of course, they will be out shortly, ready to try again.  I’m not going to wish them luck, cus they are pieces of crap, but the legal system will give them the luck they need.

A FISCAL CRISIS IN CALIFORNIA? Ed Morrissey notes that the inability to restrain spending has made this inevitable, and suggests that the likely outcome is a tax increase justified by the crisis. I’ve just been reading Daniel Weintraub’s excellent Party of One: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of the Independent Voter, which comes out in a couple of weeks, and you can certainly see how Schwarzenegger’s compassionate-conservative approach, coupled with the inbred, gerrymandered lack of accountability in the California legislature, made this inevitable. I predict that Schwarzenegger will announce a “compromise” tax increase based on the “emergency,” with some cosmetic budget cuts that won’t really amount to much. But I could be wrong — as Weintraub’s book notes, Schwarzenegger is a canny politician in many ways. However, his budget approach seems to have been based on kicking the can down the road, and that only works for so long….

Issues in the Twin Tiers: Elmira struggles with strays

Hundreds of cats. Thousands of cats. Millions and billions and trillions of cats. The city could pay a bounty of a few dollars to local kids to bring in cat pelts.

I am sure that the cat overpopulation problem would be solved in a few months.

Contests could b held, make it a community event.
