Help available for troubled parents

The death of an infant in the community under suspicious circumstances could lead some parents to consider harming their own young son or daughter, warns one local expert.  Yeah, I can feel it now, my kid didn’t load the dishwasher properly, I must plot his death.  Sigh, save me form the meddlesome know it all do gooders.  Please.

On the job, yet struggling

About two weeks ago, Irma and Neal Corey registered for assistance at the Samaritan Center on Elmira’s Southside — something they haven’t had to do since 2003 — and received a supply of groceries.

Funny, even when I was living hand to mouth, sometimes out of garbage bins as a 15 year old on the street, I never took a handout, or signed up for any assistance.  Why does it come so easy for some people?

Big Book Opens

Chemung County’s oldest charity opened it big book Monday afternoon.A bunch of kids will get a slew of stuffed animals and a heap of chinnese made toys this Christmas, wouldn’t it be better that all of that money go to something like, Holy Family, for scholarships for poor kids, and those kids are given the gift of education?  I mean, it isn’t quite the whole commercial, buy toys for kids idea of Christmas, but in the course of their lives, wouldn’t an education be a better present?

Local groups point to plight of hungry

Each year, about a week before Thanksgiving, community members, civic organizations and local schools participate in efforts to bring awareness to the homeless and hungry.  Why is it always the same people who are hungry?  Everywhere I go, I see help wanted signs, and yet people are claiming others are going hungry?  I am not buying it.  Sure, the single mother with 5 kids might not be able to buy little johnny the new xbox he so desperately wants (And needs so as not to feel ostracized from his peer group!)   Stop pumping out kids if you can’t pay to feed them.  Will children suffer in this world, unjustly because of idiot parents who should have had their tubes tied or vas deferens snipped?  Sure will.  The world is sorta like that, Stupid is supposed to…

Abandoned lambs now have a home

Seven abandoned lambs now have a home in the Southern Tier. Staff at the Farm Sanctuary near Watkins Glen say a man in Ulster County brought ten lambs to his ex-wife’s house as a gift to his daughter, but they say he didn’t tell the women or provide them any way to care for the animals.

A large pit, bedded with coals, an hour with a knife, the lambs butterflied out on the coals, covered with wet burlap bags, 12 to 14 hours later, everyone bring a side dish, cause theres going to be some good eating!  Why all the hand wringing?

A knife is a tool, a tool that every single man should carry, and most women. I use mine hourly. I bought my son his first knife when he was 8, and he has yet gone on a massacre, he has used it responsibly. He alas, can not carry it with him when he may need it most. How sad is this world we are allowing?

Canton Student Behind Bars for Showing Knife

A Canton Area High School student is behind bars Tuesday night after police said he flashed a knife in front of other students.

I’ve heard of speech codes, but I’ve never heard of anything quite like this: a mechanism to anonymously report “bias related to race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or other protected conditions” to the university administration, for possible action against the perpetrator. This system has been set up at William and Mary, and a website protesting it can be found here. Is this something new, or at least rare, or is it perhaps more common than I realize?
