OUCH: In ’survival mode,’ newspapers slashing jobs. “The increasingly rapid and broad decline in the newspaper business in recent months has surprised even the most pessimistic financial analysts, many of whom say it’s too hard to tell how far the slump will go.”

No wonder they’ve been telling us we’re in the midst of a second Great Depression. For them, it’s been true.

One only has to look in our own back yard- The Star Gazette, The FIRST Gannet paper-no longer publishes in Elmira. The call numbers are no longer in Elmira-they are somewhere down south. Although they have sales reps here to service the local businesses- Most of the ad work is done overseas as they have cut the graphic dept to almost nothing- So Im not surprised- We read it online rather than pay for poor or no delivery-

Reporters report- not investigate- there is no investigative reporting.

Newspapers are worried about advertising? The company I work for is trialing NO ADS… in several markets- BTW- I can check ads on line as well and not go through the local paper at all.

    Thats Elmira’s hometown paper? Sad.

It will be interesting, from a business perspective to see how the newspapers maneuver to survive. I think it may be a hopeless cause, but what they choose to do and how to do it will be telling.
