Elmira College Parking Headaches
As construction begins on a new 150 room dorm, some students and neighbors fear their parking headaches will only get worse.
Doesn’t EC want to get more land from the city for parking? Anything they can do to apply pressure on the parking situation has got to work in their favor, no?
The City of Elmira has a ‘master -plan’ crafted in 1998 or 1999, I believe, that prohibits Elmira College from expanding beyond certain clearly defined limits.
The plan doesn’t prohibit the College from purchasing land beyond those margins, just from building anything beyond them. It is quite a myopic plan, given the number of young adults the College brings to the city.
EC has purchased several pieces of property beyond those bordering margins, presumably in hopes of being allowed to some day expand.
Of course, we all know that properties purchased by the College are immediately removed from the tax rolls, further diminishing income to the City.
It only seems reasonable to me for the City to allow EC to build on its property. Such a move would at least bring more people to spend their money in the City.
If only there were a better working relationship between EC and the City of Elmira. As a general statement, most ‘college towns’ are great places to live. There are usually more stores and more activities in such cities.
Take a look at Ithaca.
