Elmira seeks new attorney

William O’Brien II announced Friday he is stepping down at the end of the year as Elmira’s corporation counsel to spend more time with his family.

Another thing, The whole “Spend more time with his family” part is always, I mean, always code for something else. Whats that something else?

    One can’t help but wonder.

I wonder about this suit overall. Have you ever heard of an insurance company that would reimburse for damages due to normal wear and tear or poor upkeep? I haven’t.

All depends on the riders that were written in and paid for by the city Nina.

I am sure if there were such riders, we could easily find out.

There were special riders but we haven’t heard whst they covered. Evidently the insurance company doesn’t think the same thing was covered that the City does.

But sometimes the City is prone to think what it wishes were true. The proceeds from the sale of the golf course is a good example. The City says they can use the proceeds to pay down the debt but the state says no.

I woudl be interested to find out what those riders where, it ought to clear up all the confusion.

The city can use the monies form the sale of the golf course any way they please, as long as they are willing to drag it out in the courts. Future law suits are easy to spend money on, don’t you think?

I could be wrong but isn’t the city seeking $500,000 more from the insurance company. I would think over 1/3 of that would go to pay lawyers.

The City would do well to also look at other avenues if they really wish to save money. Avenues such as no trash pickup on legal holidays, a freeze on salary increases and new hires, and obtaining a fair market value for those things that they do sell.

Not too long ago the city sold a merry-go-round for some $40,000 (that had been purchased just 4 years or so before but not used and kept in storage) that they paid over $70,000 for.

Matching grants are no bargain if we don’t have the money to make the match.

As you say, it is easy to spend someone else’s money….but if we already have a big debt we can hardly add more to it by continuing to spend, spend, spend.

You are thinking about this wrong. You are thinking about it from your side of the equation.

They will always have enough money to scrape by, no matter what they decide to spend, as there will always be a set number of people left here to tax. Even if that pool shrinks, it just means that the tax rate goes up. A simple calculus. And, as it is for the public good, no one will feel bad about it, last of all the politicians. It’s what we hired them for in the first place.

The merry go round is an easy one, and has been in play since one group of people got to spend form the public purse, just look at who wound up with the merry go round for half price, that person somehow benefited the politicians who did the buying. And people say prostitution is the oldest profession I think there is another one that has it beats by light years.

Well, I still think the least they could is run up front once in a while and give us a kiss.

We called that a ‘reach around’. It is the least they could do.

Someone is going to make money on the deal, unfortunately it isn’t going to be the taxpayers.

The world will continue to spin though.
