A knife is a tool, a tool that every single man should carry, and most women. I use mine hourly. I bought my son his first knife when he was 8, and he has yet gone on a massacre, he has used it responsibly. He alas, can not carry it with him when he may need it most. How sad is this world we are allowing?

My dad bought all of us our very own pocket knives when we were kids; my sister’s and mine were beautiful white mother of pearl; we used them when we went camping for whittling, carving our names in tress or cleaning dirt from under our fingernails! Yes, we did show them off to our friends because they were so pretty! All of the little girls in the neighborhood wanted a “Barbie knife” like ours! We played war and flood in the backyard too. We shot the bad guys with our brothers’ toy rifles also. In spite of this ‘upbringing’ we haven’t stabbed anyone yet.

Wach, exactly. My daughter has had a swiss army knife for years, never a stabbing to her name.

Our society is doing a serious disservice to our children by not allowing them these tools of life.

Whats wrong with kids today Nina, is they go along with these asinine edicts. Let every kid carry a pocket knife, and see how fast the state gets rid of that ruling, 1 day with all of them suspended will cripple the flow of funds. We would easily then see what is most important.

Bill, what would cause you to believe that if every kid were to carry a knife to school and be suspended for a day that there would be an impact on the schools flow of funding? I don’t understand your flow of thought on this one.

Sorry, I guess I have to disagree with you guys here. Kids shouldn’t have knives in this day and age, unless they have proven they are responsible enough to carry them (although, I guess I don’t get why a kid would even NEED a knife). And to bring it to school to boot!! This kid was rightfully reprimanded and I hope they do it to the next kid who brings a knife in for show and tell.

They need a knife, because it is a basic tool. It seperates us from other primates, it gives a child the ability to do any number of tasks every day (as well as while away the day whittling), it gives a child the ability to say “No”, forcefully. It teaches a child responsibility. It prepares them for the time, when they are an adult and need to protect themselves and their families. It techs fine motor control, it teaches impulse control. It gives a child a sense of connectedness with an adult, an adult who trusts them. I can see no downsides.

This day and age? Like this day and age is any different than 20 years ago? 40? or 80?

We still give them summers off to work on the farms, we ought to give them the trust of handling a tool.

Lady, I was under the impression that a school was only credited for children who attend school. I could be wrong and if so, let me know.
