Yup, the facade on 150 w 5th street collapsed, easily it could have killed anyone walking underneath it. Of course, the building is owned by another Out of State owner. A local owner would have noticed their building falling apart.

The call was heard on a scanner and a local man walked down to take some pictures. Here the are. (Click on pix for full size)

My goodness gracious. That location is just down the street from a local Restaurant that caters to Elmiran’s of all ages. They generally park along the street ( Libs Supper Club ) and walk to the Club. It is also close to a Local Bar and right around the corner from the Elmira College Campus. I’m certainly glad that none of the incoming class was out strolling the streets at the time of this collapse of an aging Elmira building owned by out of Towners.

I think it is also a good thing that a concerned citizen was able to use their legal police scanner to get this information. The clean up happened quite quickly. Hopefully, the Florida owner is sent the bill and we Elmirans are not stuck with it.

    Speaking of police scanners……..
I know this is a bit of a change of subject. But, being new to this site, I couldn’t figure out where else to put it . I hope I’ll be forgiven.

Anyway, with the Chemung County police agencies gone to digital radios, I’m trying to figure out how to listen to them. I understand that the old analog scanners/radios will no longer cut the mustard. I tried a Uniden BC246T, which is capable of receiving the trunked radio systems. I couldn’t make it receive the digital frequencies (even when using the trunked systems). Am I doing something wrong or is this scanner incapable of receiving digital.

To those who have successfully listened to the new digital signals on their scanners, can you give the rest of us a little insight into how you did it? Scanner model and description of the feature that allows you to receive the digital signal?

    Tnx, Ralph

Ok, I am a noob with this stuff also, but am enjoying it immensely.

I had originally bought a scanner (pro-433) from radio shack about three weeks ago. No one there told me that the Elmira Police Department was going digital. So I find out two week slater that my scanner is no longer good.

I box that bad boy back up, and head down to ratshack one more time. I find there are two choices from radio shack, either a desktop unit, or a handheld unit. I had a very nice discone antenna installed into my roof with cables run down to my computer dungeon (in the basemant). I decided to go witht he handheld scanner so I could drive around and maybe get pictures of the exciting stuff happening for this website. The model number is PRO-96 it ran $499.99 plus some tax.

The deal with the whole thing is that old style (analog) scanners do not pick up DIgital signals. So your analog and even analog trunked scanners will not pick up the new transmissions. You need to buy a digital scanner, like the PRO-96.

The freqs have stayed the same, so it was just a matter of keying in all the freqs into the new scanner. Clarity is much better, it seem srange is better also. Any questions, let me know, if I don’t know, we can find someone who does.

    Thanks Bill.

Although I can acknowledge that the change was a good one, I’m a bit discouraged with it. I had just bought my son a Uniden BC246T for his birthday 4 months ago. It’s too late to return it. So, he now has a scanner that is of little use. Had I known that this change was coming, I would not have made that purchase, for sure.

At this point, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t want to listen to the local police agencies badly enough to pony up $500+. So, unless I find something used (& less expensive) on Ebay, I’ll abstain from scanner-listening. Too bad; but everyone has “a price”. And, this exceeds mine. Thanks again, Bill
